I have to second that - though I didn't quite get to pubmed'ing it.  
Shouldn't you also take into account that Lance was a couple years 
older, the traditional time when stage racers come into their prime? 
And yes, that he had lost about fifteen pounds?  Perhaps they don't 
understand the gravitational forces that come into play when you climb 
an hors categorie pass.  Not to mention the fact that the "brilliant 
one day racer" was also known to jump off the front, lead for a large 
portion of the race (he did this at the nat'l championships) and then 
blow completely in the final kilometers.  Now this man weighs every 
morsel of food that passes his lips on a gram scale.
